Night Festival 2017

Three talented artists meet up in Grignan to create this romantic drama where both grotesque and sublime interact in Renaissance Italy. Art forms, dance and drama, converse in this creation which invents a new relation to body and language. The drama frees itself from all codes and is not afraid of mixing genres and tones. With its 3-D effect, the stage design has a strong aesthetic quality.

Florence, 1537. Duke Alessandro of Medici reigns over the city like a tyrant. His young cousin Lorenzaccio secretly contemplates murdering him in order to free his country and lead the Republicans to power. To this end, he gives up his honour and fame and insinuates himself into the tyrant's favours, putting himself at the mercy of his whims...

Grignan, 2017. Three talented artists meet up to create this romantic drama where both grotesque and sublime interact. Marie-Claude Pietragalla, Julien Derouault and Daniel Mesguich make their art forms, dance and drama, converse in this creation which invents a new relation to body and language. The drama frees itself from all codes and is not afraid of mixing genres and tones. With its 3-D effect, the stage design has a strong aesthetic quality. An ambitious and hybrid piece of stage directing for a contemporary Lorenzaccio.

Directors

Marie-Claude Pietragalla, who was born in Paris, is a key figure in the French dance scene. She entered the School of Dance of Paris Opera in 1973, its corps de ballet six years later and became a prima ballerina in 1990. In 1998, she took over the directorship of the Ballet National de Marseille and its National Higher School of Dance.

Julien Derouault entered the Dance Academy of Le Mans in 1994 followed by the one of Angers. In 1996, he joined Marseille National Higher School of Dance and quickly found himself in the Ballet National de Marseille then directed by Roland Petit, where he became a solo artist in 1999, under Marie-Claude Pietragalla's directorship.

In 2004, both Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Julien Derouault created their company: Le Théâtre du Corps Pietragalla – Derouault.

Daniel Mesguich was born in Alger in 1952 and admitted to the Paris National Drama School in 1971 where he was taught by Antoine Vitez and Pierre Debauche. A director and actor, he also manages the Gérard Philipe Theatre in Saint-Denis and Lille National Theatre (La Métaphore). In 1983, he returned to the Paris National Drama School to teach and was its Director General from 2007 up to 2013.
